KIDS SWIM PROGRAMS

Old City Swim School is a learn-to-swim-program that teaches life saving swimming skills along with the four classic swim strokes.

Swimmers follow a “building block” curriculum, and are promoted from one level to the next regardless of age upon successful mastery of the specific skills required at each of the 10 levels.

ABOUT US

Our year round, month-to-month membership gives you access to highly trained coaches that specialize in technique-and goal-driven learning, designed by the American Swimming Coaches Association.

Levels 1-3

For kids ages 3-12 who are are water friendly and ready to receive instruction with the primary goals of going fully underwater over their heads and learning to float and kick with their face down in the water. In these levels, swimmers will be learning through repitition and fun while going fully under water over their heads and learning floats, rollovers, and kicking without the use of flotation devices. To join Level 1, children should be:

  • comfortable getting into and spending 30 minutes in a full-size indoor pool without a parent/guardian. (Parents and guardians watch from bleachers at the end of the pool.)
  • capable of holding on to the wall securely with two hands in a pool where they cannot stand
  • amenable to taking turns and sharing in a small group of peers with an assigned coach

Levels 4-6

Swimmers focus on becoming water independent, mastering goals in various types of kicking and body swimming, learning the secret to fast and efficient freestyle and backstroke, and swimming and treading in deep water.

Our primary goal for anyone in the Learn-to-Swim program is to complete Level 6, what we call our #PoolSafe level. PoolSafe swimmers can complete 1 length of the pool (25 meters) swimming freestyle without stopping, using side breathing and proper air exchange (i.e. not holding their breath). They can also swim backstroke for half a length, breaststroke kick, body dolphin swim, and tread in deep water. A majority of both children and adults cannot do all of these skills, which when used together with common sense water safety, can prevent accidental death by drowning.

Levels 7-9

A multi-day, team-style practice called Stroke School where they will continue working on swimming with a competitive and endurance focus.

Level 10

Upon completion of Level 10, your child will be able to swim 50 meters of each competitive stroke, tread water for 8 minutes in the deep end, be comfortable in a variety of pool environments, and be able to confidently walk onto any swim team in the nation. Each Level 10 graduate also receives a personalized trophy.
